Topsfield

Topsfield Massachusetts lies in the geographic center of Essex County and is located 22 miles north of Boston and 8 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to its east. Clockwise from the north, Topsfield is bounded by Ipswich, Hamilton, Wenham, Danvers, Middleton and Boxford.

The town lies west of the Newburyport/Rockport Line of the MBTA Commuter Rail. With beautiful parks, wooded areas and fishing holes, Topsfield offers a beautiful mix of rural and suburban areas to settle in. Topsfield also includes parts of the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, Bradley Palmer State Park, Willowdale State Forest and the entirety of the Topsfield Town Forest.

Up to and through the 19th century, Topsfield was principally an agricultural town, but the manufacturing of shoes flourished for a while in Topsfield, as it did at this time across New England. The industry picked up in Topsfield during the Civil War as sewed shoes were being supplied to the Union troops.

For its first three hundred years, Topsfield was a small farm town. Most of all the settlers were self supporting farmers, blacksmiths and saw and grist mill owners.

Topsfield is home of the Topsfield Fair, one of the oldest of its type in the United States. It features carnival rides, games and concert events and exhibitions of livestock, rabbits and cavies, crafts, horses and produce. The fair also hosts the All New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off. The current record-holding pumpkin was entered in 2012 and weighed 2,009 pounds.

Topsfield has two public elementary schools, Steward School, serving grades from preschool to grade 3 and Proctor Elementary School, serving grades 4 - 6. Masconomet Regional Middle School and Masconomet Regional High School, situated together in Boxford serving grade 7 through 12. Both the high school and middle school enroll students from Boxford and Middleton.
